3. TYPICAL BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- "No Service" / "Searching..." (Baseband Circuitry Inactive):

  * Status bar displays persistent "Searching..." or "No Service".

  * Dialing *#06# does not return IMEI; "Modem Firmware" line is completely empty in Settings.

  * Root Cause: Damaged PMD9655 unable to output VDD_CORE_BB, DDR, or transceiver supply rails.

- "Cellular Update Failed" System Warning:

  * iOS displays activation/setup error stating cellular features cannot be initialized until update,

caused by baseband power failure during initial network handshake.

- Primary Logic Board Short (VDD_MAIN Short Circuit):

  * Internal high-side buck MOSFET breakdown creates a zero-ohm bridge between VDD_MAIN and Ground (GND),

causing the bench power supply to instantly snap into current limit at 0.00V.

- Extended Apple Logo Boot Hang (2 to 3 Minutes):

  * iOS kernel waits for baseband power good confirmation signal (BB_PMU_RST_N) during system boot.

If not received, it times out after prolonged hanging on the Apple logo.

4. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Board Unpowered, Battery Disconnected):

   1. Set Digital Multimeter to Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to PCB Ground (GND shield):

      - VDD_MAIN Input Filtering Capacitors around PMD9655: Normal ~360mV – 460mV.

      - VDD_CORE_BB Buck Inductors: Normal ~100mV – 200mV (low impedance line; 0.000V = dead short).

      - WTR5975 Transceiver Supply Lines: Normal ~270mV – 380mV.

      - PP1V8_SDRAM / Baseband EEPROM Pin 8: Normal ~380mV – 480mV.

      - Reset & Handshake Test Points: Normal ~500mV – 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Thermal Detection:

      - If VDD_MAIN or a core rail is shorted (0.000V), inject 1.0V (for core) or 3.7V (for VDD_MAIN)

with 1.5A limit on bench DC supply. Inspect under thermal camera: if PMD9655 glows immediately,

        remove the IC.

B. Live Operating Voltage Check (Hot Testing):

   1. Power up the board via DC bench power supply:

      - Probe the output buck inductors adjacent to PMD9655 (U_PMIC_E):

        * VDD_CORE_BB inductor must read 0.85V – 1.05V DC during network registration attempt.

        * Transceiver coils must output steady 1.05V and 1.80V DC.

        * Baseband EEPROM pin 8 must receive clean 1.80V DC.

      - On iPhone X: If voltages are missing or pulse once and collapse, verify middle-frame

interposer solder joints between top and bottom board tiers before removing PMD9655.

5. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Double-Layer Sandwich Separation (iPhone X Specific):

  * Place iPhone X logic board on a dedicated heating separation platform set to 185°C – 195°C.

  * Separate the RF lower tier once interposer solder balls melt; PMD9655 is located on the RF tier.

- Thermal Shielding & Nearby Silicon Protection:

  * On iPhone 8/8P, PMD9655 is positioned near the baseband CPU (MDM9655) and EEPROM.

  * Shield adjacent chips with thermal insulation tape (Kapton) and copper coins to absorb stray heat.

- IC Removal:

  * Apply high-quality RMA BGA tacky flux around PMD9655.

  * Hot air rework parameters: 310°C – 325°C, airflow 35% – 40% using a medium nozzle.

  * Heat evenly in small circles for 35–45 seconds. Lift cleanly with precision tweezers when molten.

- PCB Pad Cleanup & Prep:

  * Add Sn63/Pb37 (183°C) leaded solder to pads to dilute high-temp factory unleaded solder.

  * Wick pads perfectly flat using copper desoldering braid with soldering iron at 290°C – 300°C.

  * Clean residue with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect pads under microscope for any torn traces.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated 0.12mm middle-layer stencil compatible with iPhone 8/8P/X Qualcomm Baseband PMIC.

  * Spread 183°C solder paste smoothly across all apertures using a flexible scraper.

  * Reflow at 280°C with 20% airflow until uniform solder spheres form.

- Alignment & Installation:

  * Apply a micro-layer of transparent BGA flux on PCB pads.

  * Align Pin 1 orientation dot precisely with the board silkscreen corner marking.

  * Reflow at 305°C – 315°C with 35% airflow; observe chip settle and self-align on molten solder tension.
