2. CIRCUIT ARCHITECTURE & MOTHERBOARD ROLE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Master System Power Engine:
* Directly receives raw battery power (VBAT) and USB 5V (VBUS).
* Manages power sequencing for the Marvell PXA1908 SoC, 32.768kHz sleep clock oscillator, 26MHz
system reference clock, hardware reset lines, and power-on state machine.
* Translates power key press into internal bootstrap sequencing and asserts AP_RESET_N to the CPU.
- Target Compatible Smartphone Handsets:
* Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime VE: SM-G531H, SM-G531F
* Samsung Galaxy Core Prime VE: SM-G361F, SM-G361H
* Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace: SM-J110H, SM-J110F
* Samsung Galaxy J1 (Marvell): SM-J100H, SM-J100F (specific variants)
* Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3: SM-G388F.
3. COMMON MOTHERBOARD FAULT SYMPTOMS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Completely Dead Handset (0.00A Current Draw on DC Power Supply):
* No response when pressing the power button. Caused by broken solder balls under PM886EAD, damaged
power key input line, or lack of 32.768kHz RTC clock oscillation.
- Low Current Stuck / Freezing (0.03A – 0.06A Draw):
* When pressing the power key, current jumps to ~40mA–50mA on the DC power supply and hangs permanently
without fluctuating. This indicates missing BUCK1 (CPU Core) or BUCK3 (Memory RAM) voltage rails.
- Restart / Boot Loop at Samsung Brand Logo:
* Device powers on to the first "Samsung Galaxy" logo and instantly resets or shuts down. Caused by a
voltage drop on BUCK1 under high CPU loading due to dried solder balls or degraded buck coils.
- Full Primary Battery Line Short Circuit (0Ω to Ground):
* The DC power supply trips immediately upon connecting battery leads (drawing full 3A–5A). Caused by
internal breakdown of the main high-side switching FET inside PM886EAD.
- Charging Failure / Battery Stuck / Overheating:
* Phone displays battery thermometer error or fails to charge the battery while PM886EAD runs extremely hot.
4. STEP-BY-STEP DIAGNOSTIC & TROUBLESHOOTING:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cold Testing (Multimeter Diode Mode Check):
1. Disconnect battery and USB cable completely.
2. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode with RED probe placed on ground (GND shield):
- VBAT Battery Line Filter Caps: Normal reading is 400mV – 550mV.
- BUCK1 (CPU ARM Core Coil): Normal reading 120mV – 250mV (naturally low impedance).
- BUCK2 (Core Digital Logic Coil): Normal reading 200mV – 350mV.
- BUCK3 (Memory RAM Coil): Normal reading 280mV – 420mV.
- BUCK4 (VCC_IO 1.8V Coil): Normal reading 350mV – 500mV.
3. If any coil reads 0.000V (continuous beep), isolate whether the short is inside PM886EAD or the
PXA1908 processor using DC power injection (1.0V) and thermal imaging or rosin vapor.
B. Hot Testing (Live Operating Voltage Sequencing):
1. Connect stabilized bench DC power supply at 4.0V to battery terminals.
2. Verify that 4.0V VBAT is present at all input bypass capacitors around PM886EAD.
3. Check Power Key contact: Must measure 1.8V to 3.8V steady DC.
4. Press Power Key and measure voltage on all surrounding buck coils:
- BUCK1 (CPU Core) must generate ~0.9V – 1.1V.
- BUCK3 (RAM) must generate 1.2V / 1.35V.
- BUCK4 (System IO) must generate 1.8V.
5. If buck coils fail to output voltage upon pressing power key, inspect the 32.768kHz crystal and
reseat/reball PM886EAD.
5. REWORK, REBALLING & INSTALLATION GUIDELINES:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Thermal Protection & Shielding:
* Cover neighboring Marvell PXA1908 CPU and eMMC flash chip with polyimide (Kapton) tape and aluminum
foil to prevent thermal damage or accidental desoldering of adjacent underfilled chips.
- Chip Desoldering (Removal):
* Apply a small bead of quality BGA tacky flux around the perimeter of PM886EAD.
* Set hot air station to 320°C with 45% airflow.
* Heat in even circular motions. As soon as all solder balls liquefy, lift the IC vertically using fine
tweezers. Never twist or lever the chip to prevent lifting delicate PCB copper pads.
- PCB Pad Dressing:
* Flatten solder pads flat using copper desoldering braid and a soldering iron set to 300°C.
* Clean thoroughly with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and inspect under microscope for broken pads.
- Reballing & Installation:
* Place PM886EAD into a 0.12mm dedicated stencil and apply 183°C leaded solder paste.
* Heat gently at 290°C – 300°C until clean, uniform solder spheres form.
* Apply a microscope-thin film of flux to motherboard pads, align Pin 1 corner indicator dot with the
silkscreen indicator, and reflow at 310°C until the IC self-aligns. Allow the board to cool naturally.
