3. COMMON MOTHERBOARD FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Completely Dead Handset (0.00A Current Draw):

  * Power key triggers no response; missing 1.8V PWR_KEY voltage, defective 38.4MHz sleep clock crystal,

or micro-fractured BGA solder balls under PM845 due to drop impact.

- Low Current Stuck / Freezing (0.04A – 0.08A Draw):

  * Motherboard draws ~50mA to 80mA when the power key is pressed and hangs indefinitely without boot

progression (indicates a missing core rail, broken PS_HOLD line, or memory power fault).

- Automatic Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 Mode:

  * Device connects to PC exclusively in emergency download mode (EDL 9008) with a black screen due to

unstable or missing UFS 2.1 power rails (VREG_L14 / VREG_L19) generated by PM845.

- Rapid Thermal Shutdown & Battery Drain:

  * Internal short-circuit in one of PM845's buck stages causes extreme heat generation around the PMIC

shield can immediately when battery power is applied.

- High-Performance Boot Loop / Reboot at Brand Logo:

  * Handset boots up to the startup animation and suddenly resets as soon as CPU clock speeds spike,

caused by degraded buck output inductors or dry solder joints on APC core voltage rails.

4. STEP-BY-STEP DIAGNOSTIC & TROUBLESHOOTING:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Readings):

   1. Remove battery and Type-C cable completely.

   2. Select Diode Mode on digital multimeter. Connect RED probe to motherboard GND shield:

      - Main VPH_PWR Inductor & Bypass Caps: Normal reading is 360mV – 480mV.

      - VDD_APC0 (CPU Silver Cluster) Buck Inductor: Normal reading 60mV – 120mV (low impedance is normal).

      - VDD_MEM (LPDDR4X Memory) Buck Inductor: Normal reading 260mV – 380mV.

      - VDD_CORE (Digital Logic) Buck Inductor: Normal reading 120mV – 220mV.

      - UFS Storage LDO Caps: Normal reading 400mV – 580mV.

   3. Diagnostic Rule: A reading of 0.000V indicates a dead short. If found on VDD_APC or VDD_MEM, isolate

whether the short is inside PM845 or the CPU by thermal imaging at 0.9V DC injection.

B. Hot Testing (Live Operating Voltage Verification):

   1. Supply regulated 4.0V DC to motherboard battery terminals.

   2. Check VPH_PWR input filter capacitors around PM845: Must measure solid 4.0V DC.

   3. Check Power Key line: Must measure stable 1.8V DC.

   4. Trigger power key and verify switching rails:

      - Buck inductors must output 0.8V, 1.125V, and 0.9V in sequenced order.

   5. Verify PS_HOLD line: Must latch high to 1.8V from the application processor. If PS_HOLD drops back

to 0V within 1–2 seconds, inspect the CPU/RAM combo and UFS storage chip.

5. REWORK, REBALLING & INSTALLATION GUIDELINES:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Critical Precautions on SDM845 Motherboards:

  * Snapdragon 845 boards feature densely packed, underfilled RAM/CPU packages and sensitive RF front-ends.

  * Always cover adjacent underfilled chips with copper heat spreaders and multi-layer polyimide (Kapton) tape.

- Chip Desoldering (Removal):

  * Apply premium non-corrosive tacky BGA flux around PM845.

  * Set hot air station to 325°C with 45% airflow.

  * Move hot air nozzle in smooth circular motions. As soon as all solder balls liquefy, lift the IC

vertically using fine precision tweezers. Never force or twist the chip to prevent pad tear-out.

- PCB Pad Dressing:

  * Flatten solder pads using copper desoldering wick and a chisel-tip soldering iron set to 300°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and inspect under microscope for pad degradation.

- Reballing & Installation:

  * Mount PM845 into a 0.12mm dedicated SDM845 stencil and apply 183°C leaded solder paste.

  * Heat gently at 290°C – 300°C until perfect, uniform solder spheres form.

  * Apply a microscope-thin layer of flux to PCB pads, align the Pin 1 corner indicator dot with the

board silkscreen marking, and reflow at 310°C until self-alignment occurs. Allow natural cooling.
