- Functional Subsystems:

  * Primary Switching Power Path (VPH_PWR Generation):

    - Synchronous step-down buck converter stepping down VBUS (5V, 9V, 12V) or VBAT to create stable

      3.8V – 4.2V VPH_PWR rail for the entire logic board.

  * Switch-Mode Fast Battery Charger:

    - High-current buck charging stage supporting up to 3.0A – 4.0A (Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+, USB-PD 3.0).

    - Battery Fuel Gauge with precision current sense and BATT_THERM analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

  * Display Power Subsystem:

    - Integrated dual programmable boost converter generating AMOLED display bias (+4.6V / -4.0V)

      or high-voltage WLED backlight boost (up to 35V DC).

3. TYPICAL BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Completely Dead Handset with Dead VPH_PWR Short (0.000V in Diode Mode):

  * Extremely prevalent in Poco X3 Pro. An internal high-side buck MOSFET breaks down, connecting the

    primary 4.0V VPH_PWR rail directly to ground. Bench power supply trips immediately on connection.

- Fake / Stuck Charging (Drawing 0.00A or 0.10A on USB Meter):

  * Charging bolt displays on screen, but current ingestion is zero; battery drains instead of charging

    due to an open buck coil, damaged bootstrap capacitor, or internal charger FET failure in PM8150B.

- Display Black Screen (Missing Backlight / OLED Bias):

  * Handset boots normally with vibration, sounds, and incoming call rings, but screen remains completely

    blank due to failure in PM8150B's integrated boost converter.

- Extreme Localized Heating around Charger Shielding:

  * Device gets hot immediately upon connecting battery even without pressing the power key.

- OTG / Fast Charging Failure:

  * Phone charges only at slow 5V 0.5A speed; Quick Charge and PC USB data communication fail due to

    damaged CC1/CC2 or D+/D- logic inside PM8150B.

4. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Board Powered Off):

   1. Select Diode Mode on digital multimeter. Connect RED probe to motherboard GND shield:

      - Main VPH_PWR Switching Inductor & Bypass Caps: Normal ~360mV – 480mV. If 0.000V, dead short.

      - VBUS 5V/9V Input Filter Capacitors: Normal ~500mV – 650mV.

      - Battery Positive Terminal (VBAT): Normal ~450mV – 550mV.

      - USB CC1 / CC2 Lines: Normal ~600mV – 720mV.

      - Display Bias Caps (+4.6V / -4.0V): Normal ~450mV – 600mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Isolation:

      - If VPH_PWR reads 0.000V, inject 3.8V DC (limited to 2.5A) directly onto the VPH_PWR line using

        rosin smoke or thermal imaging. If PM8150B glows white hot immediately, remove the IC.

B. Live Operating Voltage Check (Hot Testing):

   1. Plug in Type-C charger (5V / 9V) without battery connected:

      - Verify 5.0V on input filter capacitor next to PM8150B.

      - Measure VPH_PWR switching inductor: Must oscillate and output stable 3.8V – 4.2V DC.

      - Check VBAT battery connector pin: Must pulse periodically between 3.7V and 4.2V (battery detection).

   2. Connect battery and press power button:

      - Verify steady 1.8V on the SPMI clock and data lines communicating with Master PM8150.

   3. If input 5V is present, but VPH_PWR remains at 0V, replace PM8150B.

5. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Thermal Shielding Precautions:

  * On Poco X3 Pro and Xiaomi Mi boards, PM8150B is located close to the CPU/RAM dual-stack and UFS storage.

  * Always protect the CPU/RAM combo and nearby components with multiple layers of high-temp Kapton tape

    and thick copper heatsink shields to prevent solder bridging under the CPU.

- IC Removal:

  * Apply premium non-corrosive RMA tacky BGA flux around PM8150B.

  * Hot air station settings: 315°C – 325°C with 40% – 50% airflow.

  * Heat in even circular motions; lift vertically with micro-tweezers as soon as solder liquefies.

- Pad Preparation & Cleaning:

  * Solder-wick the PCB pads flat using copper braid and an iron tip set to 290°C – 300°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and verify pads under microscope.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated 0.12mm stencil compatible with Qualcomm PM8150 / PM8150B / SM8150.

  * Apply 183°C (Sn63/Pb37) leaded solder paste evenly. Heat gently at 290°C until uniform spheres form.

- Re-installation:

  * Apply an ultra-thin film of flux to motherboard pads.

  * Align Pin 1 dot with the PCB corner indicator. Reflow at 305°C – 315°C until the IC naturally self-centers.

  * Allow motherboard to cool naturally for 5 minutes before connecting DC power or charger.
