3. TYPICAL BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- "No Service" / "Searching" / Baseband Unknown:

  * Device boots to home screen normally, but cellular network shows "No Service" or "Emergency Calls Only".

  * In Settings -> About Phone -> "Baseband Version" displays "Unknown" or blank.

  * Cause: PM8005 failed to output the modem core or RF transceiver voltage rails.

- Fixed Stuck Current Boot Freeze (0.05A – 0.09A Draw):

  * Motherboard powers on, draws a continuous 50mA – 90mA on the DC power supply, and freezes completely.

  * The Application Processor halts boot initialization because the secondary power rail handshake

    from PM8005 is missing.

- Standby Battery Drain & Motherboard Heating:

  * Phone battery drains rapidly overnight (15% – 30%) with the phone getting noticeably warm around the

RF / baseband shielding can even in standby mode (caused by internal leaky LDO inside PM8005).

- Main VPH_PWR / VBAT Short Circuit:

  * Internal breakdown of PM8005's high-side FET shorts the primary power rail to ground (0.000V in

diode mode), causing the bench power supply to trip instantly.

- Camera Crash upon Launching:

  * Camera app immediately closes or throws "Camera Failed" error due to missing sensor AVDD supplies.

4. STEP-BY-STEP DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Motherboard Powered Off):

   1. Place Multimeter in Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to motherboard GND shield:

      - Main VPH_PWR Input Capacitors next to PM8005: Normal ~360mV – 480mV.

      - Baseband Buck Coils (around PM8005): Normal ~180mV – 280mV (must not read 0.000V).

      - RF Transceiver LDO Output Capacitors: Normal ~400mV – 580mV.

      - 1.8V VIO Auxiliary Lines: Normal ~380mV – 500mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Isolation:

      - If a Baseband coil reads 0.000V, inject 0.9V DC (max 2A) directly into the coil using rosin smoke

or thermal imaging to verify if PM8005 or the baseband section of the AP is heating up.

B. Live Operating Voltage Check (Hot Testing):

   1. Connect DC bench power supply at 4.0V to battery terminals.

   2. Verify steady 4.0V VPH_PWR on input bypass capacitors of PM8005.

   3. Press Power Button and observe voltage initialization:

      - Baseband core coil must generate ~0.80V – 0.95V during modem startup.

      - RF transceiver rail must generate stable 1.2V / 1.8V.

   4. If baseband voltage collapses to 0V after 2 seconds, check whether the modem firmware is intact

or if PM8005 has solder joint fractures underneath.

5. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Thermal Shielding & Precautions:

  * Since PM8005 is located in the dense RF/Baseband section, protect nearby RF transceivers, power

amplifiers (PA), and filter duplexers with double-layer Kapton tape and thick aluminum heat shields.

- Chip Removal:

  * Apply premium non-corrosive RMA BGA flux around PM8005.

  * Hot air station settings: 315°C – 325°C with 40% – 50% airflow.

  * Move nozzle in uniform circular motion. Once solder balls are fully liquefied, lift the IC vertically

using fine micro-tweezers. Never pull or pry against resistance to avoid tearing PCB traces.

- Pad Preparation:

  * Solder-wick the PCB pads using copper desoldering braid and a soldering iron at 300°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and inspect under microscope for missing/shorted pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated 0.12mm middle-layer stencil compatible with Qualcomm PM8005 / MSM8998 / SDM845.

  * Apply 183°C (Sn63/Pb37) leaded solder paste evenly. Heat at 290°C – 300°C until perfect, uniform spheres form.

- Re-installation:

  * Apply a minimal, paper-thin film of flux to motherboard pads.

  * Align Pin 1 dot with the silkscreen corner indicator.

  * Reflow at 310°C until the IC self-aligns onto its pads. Allow the board to cool naturally for 5 minutes.
