SM5328 DISPLAY LIGHT CONTROL & CHARGING IC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE
====================================================================================================
1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & SURROUNDING CIRCUIT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Boost Step-Up Topology:
* The SM5328 works directly alongside a 10uH or 22uH SMD Boost Coil, an ultra-fast Schottky Boost Diode,
and high-voltage filter capacitors (typically rated at 35V–50V).
* Pin inputs: VBAT / VPH_PWR (Battery rail), Display Enable (EN / PWM from CPU), I2C communication lines.
* Pin outputs: LED_A (Backlight Anode Boost Voltage, ~18V–28V), LED_K1/K2 (Cathode feedback lines).
- Secondary Role:
* In Vivo Y91/Y93/Y95 architectures, it also interfaces with the 5V VBUS sub-charging detection circuit
and handles secondary voltage detection.
2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (COMMON DEFECTS):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- No Display Light (Black Screen with Graphics Present):
* The phone turns on, vibrates, rings, and graphics/Apple/Android logo can be faintly seen when shining a
torchlight onto the screen, but the backlight LEDs do not turn on.
- Dim or Flickering Screen Backlight:
* Display is extremely dim even when brightness is set to 100%, or flashes intermittently during boot.
- Overheating near Display Connector:
* When charging or booting, the area around the SM5328 gets hot immediately due to internal switching FET breakdown.
- No Charging / False Charging (in Vivo models):
* Phone fails to recognize charger input or current remains stuck at 0.00A–0.10A.
3. MULTIMETER DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING PROCEDURE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode - Battery & Screen Disconnected):
1. Place RED probe on motherboard Ground (metal shield frame), probe with BLACK probe:
- Display FPC Connector LED_A (Anode pin): Must measure ~450mV to 650mV. (0.000V = Shorted capacitor/diode).
- Display FPC Connector LED_K (Cathode pins): Must measure ~500mV to 700mV.
- Boost Diode Cathode: Must show ~450mV–600mV.
2. Boost Coil & Diode Check:
- Test Boost Coil continuity: Must read ~0.001V–0.003V (direct pass). If open-circuit, replace coil.
- Test Schottky Diode: Measure in forward bias (~200mV–350mV) and reverse bias (OL / infinite).
B. Hot Testing (Screen Connected, Battery Connected, Power On):
1. Power on the phone and measure DC Voltage at the Anode (LED_A) test point:
- While screen is on: Must jump from 3.8V up to +18.0V ~ +26.0V DC.
- If voltage stays stuck at battery voltage (~3.8V to 4.2V), the SM5328 is not boosting (IC damaged,
missing EN signal from CPU, or burned boost coil).
4. MICRO-SOLDERING & REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Package Architecture:
* 12-Ball micro BGA / WLCSP footprint.
- Chip Removal:
* Apply a droplet of high-grade RMA flux around the chip.
* Hot air station settings: Temperature 330°C – 340°C, Airflow 20% – 25%.
* Heat gently in circular motions for 12 to 15 seconds. Lift with ultra-fine tweezers once the solder melts.
- Cleaning & Pad Prep:
* Use 183°C leaded solder wire and copper desoldering wick to flatten the pads on the motherboard.
* Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to inspect pad integrity under the microscope.
- Alignment & Soldering:
* Apply a very light, tacky film of flux on the pads.
* Observe the Pin 1 orientation dot on the corner of the SM5328 and align it strictly with the PCB silkscreen mark.
* Apply hot air at 310°C – 320°C with 15%–20% airflow until the chip sinks into place and self-aligns.
* Check the adjacent boost coil and boost diode; if they are discolored or burned, replace them simultaneously
to prevent the new SM5328 from failing immediately.
