SILICON MITUS SM5109 15-PIN LCD BIAS POWER IC REWORK GUIDE
====================================================================================================
1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Single-Inductor Dual-Output (SIDO) Topology:
* Uses a single external switching inductor (typically 4.7µH) to generate two simultaneous, regulated
power rails from the single battery rail (VBAT ~3.8V):
1. VSP (Voltage Source Positive / AVDD): Regulated +5.0V to +5.5V DC.
2. VSN (Voltage Source Negative / AVEE): Regulated -5.0V to -5.5V DC (inverted negative charge pump).
* These dual symmetrical rails are directly routed to the LCD display FPC connector to drive the liquid
crystal matrix. Without both voltages present, the LCD cannot display any image or graphics.
- Enable & Timing Synchronization:
* Triggered via LCD_ENP (Enable Positive) and LCD_ENN (Enable Negative) control signals from the
Application Processor / Display Controller upon wake-up.
- Over-Current & Short Protection:
* Automatically shuts down if an output line shorts to ground (e.g. cracked LCD or liquid damaged FPC socket).
2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- No Graphics / Completely Black Screen (Phone Boots & Vibrates):
* Phone powers on, plays ringtones, receives calls, and vibrates normally, but the screen stays
completely black (no picture, even if backlight is active).
- Missing Negative or Positive Bias (+5V Present, -5V Missing):
* Display shows a faint blue or white screen, vertical colored lines, or distorted flickering image
caused by one collapsed bias rail.
- Dead Motherboard / Battery Line Short:
* Breakdown of the internal switching FET shorts VBAT directly to ground (0.000V in diode mode),
preventing the phone from powering on.
- Sudden Shutdown When Screen Turns On:
* Phone boots into sleep mode, but the second the power button is clicked to wake the screen, the device
cuts off instantly due to an over-current latch triggered inside SM5109.
- Extreme Component Overheating:
* SM5109 becomes burning hot immediately upon pressing the power button.
3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & LCD Disconnected):
1. Place multimeter in Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to PCB Ground (shield frame), probe with BLACK probe:
- VBAT Input Capacitor: Normal reading is ~380mV to 520mV (0.000V indicates a dead short).
- Switching Inductor (SW Node): Normal reading is ~350mV to 480mV.
- VSP (+5V Output Filter Capacitor): Normal reading is ~480mV to 650mV.
- VSN (-5V Output Filter Capacitor): Normal reading is ~520mV to 720mV (Reverse measurement: connect
BLACK probe to ground and RED probe to VSN capacitor to verify diode drop on negative rail).
- Enable Lines (ENP / ENN): Normal reading is ~500mV to 700mV.
2. Short-Circuit Verification:
- If VSP or VSN capacitor reads 0.000V, inspect the display FPC connector for burnt pins or liquid
corrosion before removing SM5109.
B. Hot Testing (Phone Powered On with Display Connected):
1. Turn on phone or wake up screen by pressing power button:
- Measure VSP capacitor / FPC Pin: Must read steady +5.0V to +5.5V DC.
- Measure VSN capacitor / FPC Pin: Must read steady -5.0V to -5.5V DC (verify negative polarity on meter).
- If VBAT and enable signals are present but either +5V or -5V rail fails to output, SM5109 is defective.
4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Micro 15-Ball BGA Package (3 x 5 Ball Grid Array):
* SM5109 is an ultra-miniature 15-pin wafer-level chip with bare silicon glass on top. Localized overheating
or mechanical pressure from tweezers will crack the silicon die.
- IC Desoldering Procedure:
* Shield surrounding plastic display FPC sockets and connectors with Kapton or aluminum heat tape.
* Apply a tiny drop of high-grade RMA tacky flux around the SM5109 perimeter.
* Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 340°C, Airflow 25%–30%.
* Apply heat in gentle circular motions for 12–15 seconds. Once solder balls fully liquefy, lift
the chip straight upward with precision micro-tweezers.
- Motherboard Pad Preparation:
* Apply leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37, 183°C) to dilute high-temperature factory lead-free alloy.
* Clean the pads flat using fine copper desoldering braid and a soldering iron at 280°C.
* Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under a microscope to ensure all 15
pads are bright, level, and clean.
- Reballing Procedure:
* Use a dedicated SM5109 / universal display BGA stencil (0.12mm thickness, 0.4mm pitch).
* Smoothly pack 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste into all 15 apertures.
* Heat with hot air set to 275°C with low airflow (15%) until 15 uniform, shiny solder spheres form.
- Placement & Final Reflow:
* Spread a microscopic film of tacky flux on the PCB footprint.
* Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot with the motherboard silkscreen corner marker.
* Reflow at 305°C – 310°C with 25% airflow; the chip will automatically pull into center alignment
via molten solder surface tension.
* Let the board cool naturally for 3 minutes before connecting LCD and testing display output.
