           SM3010A AMOLED DISPLAY BIAS IC DETAILED TECHNICAL & HARDWARE REWORK GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. WORKING PRINCIPLE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- AMOLED / OLED Power Generation:

  * Unlike conventional LCDs that use high-voltage LED backlights, AMOLED screens emit their own light

    from individual sub-pixels and require precise dual-polarity supply rails:

    1. ELVDD: Positive boost voltage (~+4.6V DC) providing current to drive OLED diodes.

    2. ELVSS: Negative inverted buck-boost voltage (typically -1.4V to -4.4V DC, controlled dynamically

       to adjust screen brightness and contrast).

    3. AVDD / VCI: Analog and digital operating voltages (+3.0V / +1.8V DC) for display driver circuits.

  * SM3010A integrates high-efficiency step-up boost converters, inverting charge pumps, and low-dropout

    (LDO) regulators inside a microscopic BGA chip to generate these rails concurrently.

- Control & Synchronization:

  * Communicates with the Application Processor (AP/CPU) and Display Driver IC (DDIC) via I2C / SPMI or

    dedicated enable/sync signal lines (DISP_EN, EN_EL).

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (خرابی کی نشانیاں):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Black Screen / No Display (Screen Blank, Sound/Vibration OK):

  * The phone boots normally, vibrates on charging, rings on incoming calls, and connects to PC, but the

    OLED screen remains completely black.

- Dim Display / Flashing / Immediate Blackout After Samsung Logo:

  * Display appears for 1–2 seconds during the initial boot logo and then cuts off as soon as high-current

    ELVDD/ELVSS rails are engaged by the OS.

- VPH_PWR / VBAT Dead Short:

  * Internal boost switching FET breakdown shorts the primary power bus directly to ground, causing the

    phone to not turn on and DC power supplies to trigger over-current shutdown (0.000V in diode mode).

- Motherboard Overheating:

  * Localized heat near the display FPC connector or SIM tray area during normal operation or standby.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery Disconnected):

   1. Place Multimeter in Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to PCB Ground (Shielding can), test with BLACK probe:

      - Input Power Rail (VPH_PWR / VBAT capacitor): Normal ~400mV – 500mV (0.000V = dead short).

      - ELVDD Output Coil / Filter Capacitor (+4.6V line): Normal ~450mV – 580mV.

      - ELVSS Output Coil / Capacitor (-4.4V line): Normal ~550mV – 750mV (Note: polarity behaves reversed

        due to internal negative pump circuitry; verify against known-good board).

      - Display Interface Control Lines (EN, I2C SCL/SDA): Normal ~400mV – 650mV.

   2. Low Impedance Detection:

      - If ELVDD or ELVSS reads 0.000V, remove the parallel filter capacitors first before lifting SM3010A.

B. Hot Testing (Board Powered with Screen Connected or Jumpered):

   1. Connect screen and press Power button:

      - Probe the ELVDD boost capacitor: Verify presence of stable +4.6V DC.

      - Probe the ELVSS capacitor: Verify presence of stable negative voltage (-1.4V to -4.0V DC).

      - Verify input supply: Stable 3.8V – 4.2V DC on input bypass capacitor.

      - If input voltage is present and enable signal is high (1.8V) but ELVDD or ELVSS measures 0V, SM3010A

        or its external boost inductor is defective and must be replaced.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- BGA Chip Removal:

  * Shield neighboring CPU, RAM, or UFS memory with copper foil or thermal insulation tape.

  * Apply high-grade low-smoke RMA tacky flux around SM3010A.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 345°C, airflow 30% – 35% with a fine-tip nozzle.

  * Circle the heat evenly over the chip for 15–25 seconds. Gently nudge with tweezers; once solder balls

    liquefy completely, lift the chip straight up to avoid bridging board pads.

- Motherboard Pad Preparation:

  * Apply 183°C (Sn63/Pb37) leaded solder paste to lower the pad melting point.

  * Smooth and flatten all motherboard micro-pads using fine copper desoldering wick and a knife-tip iron

    at 280°C – 300°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); verify no pad bridging under a microscope.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated 0.12mm SM3010/SM3010A direct-heat stencil or universal 0.35mm/0.4mm pitch BGA stencil.

  * Apply 183°C medium-viscosity solder paste evenly across all stencil apertures.

  * Heat with hot air set to 280°C – 300°C, low airflow (15%–20%) until bright, uniform solder spheres form.

- Chip Placement & Reflow:

  * Apply an extremely thin film of tacky flux on the PCB pads.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation index dot with the board silkscreen marker.

  * Reflow at 310°C – 320°C with 30% airflow. Watch for the chip to automatically pull into position by

    solder surface tension. Give a microscopic nudge to verify solder elasticity.

  * Allow the PCB to cool down completely before connecting display and battery.
