SKYWORKS SKY58081-11 / SKY58091-11 RF FRONT-END MODULE REWORK GUIDE
====================================================================================================
1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Multimode Multiband Power Amplifier (PA):
* Low-Band 3G / 4G / 5G PA blocks supporting WCDMA/HSPA+, FDD-LTE, and 5G NR (Bands: 5, 8, 12, 20,
26, 28, 71; 5G NR: n5, n8, n12, n20, n28, n71).
* High-efficiency Low-Band & High-Band 2G GSM/GPRS/EDGE Power Amplifiers.
- Integrated RF Filtering & Duplexers:
* Contains internal switched duplexer SAW/BAW filters for Bands 8, 12, 20, and 26.
* Internal low-pass and harmonic rejection filters supporting Downlink Carrier Aggregation (L+M, L+H CA).
- Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) & Switches:
* Features integrated LNAs for improved receive sensitivity on weak signals.
* Internal multi-throw antenna switches dynamically route TX and RX paths to the main antenna.
- MIPI RFFE 3.0 Digital Control:
* Operates from a 1.8V VIO digital bus with high-speed serial data (SDATA) and clock (SCLK) lines
controlled directly by the baseband / RF transceiver (Qualcomm WTR/SDR or MediaTek MT61xx).
- Power Supply Architecture:
* Powered by Envelope Tracking (ET) or Average Power Tracking (APT) modulator (VPA rail typically
0.5V to 3.4V dynamic) and direct battery/PMIC supply (VBAT/VCC1/VCC2).
2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- No Service / Searching for Network (Low-Band Networks):
* Phone displays "Searching..." or "No Service" on SIM cards that use 850MHz / 900MHz / Band 5 / Band 8
(Telenor, Zong, Jazz 2G/4G low-bands).
- Emergency Calls Only / Signal Fails on Outgoing Calls:
* The phone shows 2–3 signal bars on standby, but the instant a call is dialed, signal bars drop to zero,
"Call Ended" appears, or the phone drops into "Emergency Calls Only" (PA fails under high TX current).
- Phone Drops from 4G/5G to 2G:
* When mobile data is turned on, the phone drops from 4G/5G down to 2G or "E" (Edge) because 4G/5G low-band
TX amplification is inactive.
- Primary Short to Ground on VPA / VBAT (Dead Phone):
* Internal GaAs/CMOS power amplifier transistor breakdown causes a dead short (0.000V in diode mode) on
the VPA supply line, causing the DC power supply to beep/trip immediately or the phone to freeze at 0.00A.
- Rapid Battery Drain & Motherboard Heating:
* The RF section under the metal shield becomes excessively hot during phone calls or internet usage due to
internal bias leakage inside SKY58081-11.
3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):
1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place the RED probe on ground (metal shield frame) and probe
surrounding capacitors/test points with the BLACK probe:
- VPA / APT Power Rail (Large SMD filter inductor/capacitors nearby): Normal reading is ~350mV to 480mV.
(0.000V indicates a shorted internal PA stage).
- VCC / VBAT Line: Normal reading is ~380mV to 500mV.
- VIO 1.8V MIPI Supply Capacitor: Normal reading is ~450mV to 600mV.
- MIPI Control Lines (RFFE_SDATA / RFFE_SCLK): Normal readings are ~400mV to 550mV on both lines
(must match within 10mV to 15mV of each other).
- RF Input / Output Lines: Coupling series capacitors must read high resistance (>600mV or open on the RF side).
2. Short-Circuit Isolation:
- If the VPA coil reads 0.000V, apply rosin smoke across the RF shielding compartment and inject 2.5V DC
(limited to 1.5A). If SKY58081-11 melts the rosin instantly, the IC is internally shorted.
B. Hot Testing (Operating Voltage Checks with Phone Powered On & SIM Inserted):
1. Insert a working SIM card and power on the phone:
- Check VIO Line: Must read stable 1.8V DC.
- Check VPA Line:
* On idle/standby: typically ~0.6V to 1.2V DC.
* While placing an active phone call: VPA should immediately jump up to ~2.8V – 3.4V DC as the transmitter activates.
- If 1.8V VIO is present and VPA jumps up during a call, but transmission fails and RF output is zero,
the internal amplifier transistors or duplexers in SKY58081-11 are blown.
4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Package Architecture:
* 56-pad Land Grid Array (LGA) with a multi-segment central ground pad array and perimeter RF signal pads.
- Thermal Shielding & Pre-Heating:
* RF modules have high ground copper dissipation. Pre-heat the entire PCB from the underside at 150°C
using a preheating plate to avoid PCB blistering or warping.
* Cover nearby sensitive ICs (baseband processor, transceiver, CPU/eMMC) with double-layer Kapton tape
and thick copper/aluminum heat-deflector tape.
- Removal Parameters:
* Apply a small amount of low-residue tacky flux (Amtech NC-559 or Kingbo) along the edges of the module.
* Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 335°C – 350°C, Airflow 30%–35%.
* Heat evenly in continuous circular motions for 25–30 seconds. Do NOT pry with force! Once solder liquefies,
gently nudge the corner; if it moves smoothly, lift it vertically with anti-static micro-tweezers.
- PCB Pad Cleanup:
* Apply 183°C leaded solder wire (Sn63/Pb37) with a flat chisel soldering tip at 300°C to dilute lead-free solder.
* Clean and level the 56 pads completely flat using high-grade copper desoldering wick and flux.
* Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect under a microscope to ensure no solder bridges.
- Stencil & Reballing:
* Use a dedicated 58081-11 / 58091-11 or universal LGA-56 stencil (0.12mm thickness).
* Use 183°C medium-dry leaded solder paste. Wipe clean, hold flat with tweezers, and heat at 280°C with
low airflow (15%) until uniform solder bumps form across all 56 pads.
- Installation:
* Spread a microscopic layer of tacky flux over the PCB footprint (excess flux will cause RF pads to bridge).
* Align the Pin 1 orientation dot on the chip with the white silkscreen corner triangle on the motherboard.
* Reflow using hot air at 320°C – 335°C with 20% airflow. Watch the module self-align into center position.
Give a microscopic nudge to verify solder surface tension.
* Allow the board to cool naturally for 5 minutes before reassembling antennas and running network diagnostics.
