SGMICRO SGM41511 3A I2C FAST CHARGER IC DETAILED REWORK GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Synchronous Buck Charging Stage:

  * Converts 5V USB standard adapter input or higher voltage charger sources (3.9V to 13.5V DC) into

precise, high-efficiency battery charging current (up to 3.0A) at 1.5MHz switching frequency.

  * Achieves 93% charging efficiency at 1A and 91% at 2A from a standard 5V input.

- NVDC (Narrow Voltage Direct Current) Power Path:

  * Decouples the main motherboard system rail (VSYS / VPH_PWR) from the battery terminals. When the phone

has a completely dead or disconnected battery, the device turns on immediately when plugged into a charger.

- Internal Integrated Power Switches:

  * Houses four monolithic low-resistance MOSFETs:

    1. RBFET: Reverse blocking FET to prevent current backflow from battery to charger.

    2. HSFET & LSFET: High-side and low-side switching pair for synchronous buck/boost conversion.

    3. BATFET: High-efficiency 28mΩ power switch connecting/disconnecting battery from system load.

- USB-OTG Reverse Boost:

  * In OTG mode, SGM41511 reverses operation to step up battery voltage to 5.0V DC (up to 1.2A output)

out of the USB port to power flash drives, mouse, or OTG peripherals.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS (خرابی کی نشانیاں):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Zero Ampere Draw / No Charging Response:

  * Connecting a USB charger draws 0.000A on the USB digital power doctor; no charging battery animation appears.

- Fake Charging (فیک چارجنگ):

  * The charging indicator shows on screen, but battery percentage stays frozen or drains while plugged in

    (USB meter draws only 0.05A–0.12A).

- Slow Charging (سلو چارجنگ):

  * Charging current is permanently throttled at 0.40A–0.45A due to failed USB input limit negotiation (IINDPM)

    or defective external switching inductor.

- Completely Dead Phone (VPH_PWR / VSYS Short):

  * Internal high-side buck MOSFET breakdown shorts the primary power rail directly to ground, causing bench

DC power supplies to sound the over-current alarm immediately upon battery connection.

- Auto-Shutdown When Charger is Unplugged:

  * Phone works while connected to the charger, but cuts off instantly the moment the cable is pulled out

(blown internal BATFET unable to supply current from battery to system).

- Burning Sensation / Severe IC Overheating:

  * SGM41511 becomes scorching hot immediately upon inserting the charging cable.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Place Multimeter in Diode Mode. Connect RED probe to PCB Ground (Shielding can), test with

      BLACK probe around SGM41511:

      - VBUS Input Filter Capacitors: Normal ~520mV – 650mV (0.000V = dead short on Type-C/Micro-USB 5V line).

      - PMID Capacitors (Internal High-Side Rail): Normal ~480mV – 620mV.

      - SW (Switch Node) / Output Inductor: Normal ~340mV – 460mV.

      - VSYS / VPH_PWR Filter Capacitors: Normal ~350mV – 480mV.

      - VBAT Battery Connector Positive Pin: Normal ~380mV – 500mV.

      - I2C Communication Lines (SDA / SCL): Normal ~450mV – 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Isolation:

      - If VBUS or VSYS reads 0.000V, inject 3.8V DC (limited to 1.5A). Observe with thermal camera or rosin:

if SGM41511 illuminates white-hot, remove the chip.

B. Hot Testing (USB Charger Connected):

   1. Plug in verified 5V USB charger:

      - Check VBUS capacitor: Must measure steady 5.0V – 5.2V DC.

      - Check PMID capacitor: Must measure 5.0V DC. If VBUS has 5V but PMID has 0V, internal RBFET is blown.

      - Check switching coil output: Must measure stable system voltage (3.6V to 4.35V DC).

      - Check VBAT battery connector: Must output active charging voltage. If VSYS is 4.0V but VBAT pin

is 0V, BATFET inside SGM41511 is open.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- QFN-24 Center Thermal Ground Pad:

  * SGM41511 uses a 24-lead QFN package with an exposed center ground pad. Proper solder bond on this pad

is critical for ground return and thermal dissipation under 3A fast charging loads.

- IC Desoldering:

  * Shield surrounding plastic connectors (battery socket, sub-board FPC) with Kapton or aluminum heat tape.

  * Apply high-grade, non-corrosive RMA tacky flux around SGM41511.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 330°C – 345°C, airflow 35% with a medium nozzle.

  * Move nozzle in uniform circles over the chip for 20–25 seconds. Touch gently with fine tweezers;

once the center pad solder liquefies, lift straight up without dragging across pads.

- Motherboard Pad Cleaning:

  * Apply leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37, 183°C) to dilute high-melt unleaded factory alloy.

  * Flatten perimeter leads and the center thermal pad using fine copper desoldering braid and a chisel-tip

    soldering iron at 285°C – 300°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); inspect pads under a microscope for bridging.

- Stencil Application & Soldering:

  * Use a 0.12mm QFN-24 (0.5mm pitch) stencil or apply a thin, uniform layer of 183°C leaded solder paste.

On the center thermal pad, apply a cross-hatch pattern to avoid excess solder balling.

- Placement & Final Reflow:

  * Spread a microscopic film of tacky flux on PCB footprint.

  * Align Pin 1 index dot precisely with the motherboard silkscreen marker.

  * Reflow at 305°C – 315°C with 30% airflow; the chip will automatically pull into center alignment via

    molten solder surface tension.

  * Allow motherboard to cool naturally for 3–5 minutes before connecting battery and USB charger.
