               SAMSUNG S555 MAIN PMIC REWORK & DIAGNOSTIC HARDWARE GUIDE

====================================================================================================

1. FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & POWER DELIVERY ROLE:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Switching Regulators:

  * Generates core processing voltages directly from VBAT / VDD_MAIN.

  * VDD_CPU_CORE / VDD_BIG / VDD_LITTLE: Provides dynamic, ultra-low voltage (0.7V to 1.15V) to the

    high-performance and energy-efficient processor cores.

  * VDD_MIF (Memory Interface Rail): Supplies stable ~0.8V to 1.0V for LPDDR4X memory interconnect.

  * VDD_INT (Internal System Core): Powers internal system blocks, GPU logic, and digital buses.

- Ultra-Low-Noise LDO Sub-Regulators:

  * Contains dozens of internal Low Dropout Regulators (LDOs) delivering clean 1.2V, 1.8V, 2.8V, and 3.3V

    rails for high-resolution cameras, display MIPI interfaces, touchscreen, UFS storage, and audio codecs.

- System Boot Controller & Power Sequencing:

  * Monitors power key press triggers, drives system reset lines (RESET_N), generates 32.768 kHz RTC clock

    signals, and communicates with the application processor via high-speed bidirectional I2C / SPMI control bus.

2. BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Completely Dead Motherboard (Zero Current Draw / 0.000A):

  * When connected to a DC power supply, pressing the power button produces 0.000A or a tiny pulse

    (0.01A–0.02A) that immediately drops back to zero.

- Low Current Freeze on Boot (Stuck at 0.04A to 0.08A):

  * Motherboard draws a steady 40mA–80mA upon pressing the power button and freezes, indicating that the

    first boot buck rail is active but secondary LDO or VDD_MIF / VDD_CPU rails fail to output.

- Dead Short to Ground on VBAT / VDD_MAIN:

  * Connecting the motherboard to a DC bench power supply causes an instant over-current trigger (DC power

    supply trips or shows high ampere draw before pressing the power button) due to shorted internal high-side

    switching MOSFETs inside S555.

- Bootloop / Stuck on Samsung Galaxy Logo:

  * Phone turns on, shows the Samsung logo, and restarts indefinitely or shuts down when heavy OS tasks load

    (caused by voltage drop or defective feedback resistor loops on VDD_CPU or VDD_MIF coils).

- Severe Localized Overheating:

  * S555 heats up rapidly and reaches burning temperatures within 5 seconds of connecting battery or charger.

3. STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Cold Testing (Diode Mode Check - Battery & Charger Disconnected):

   1. Set digital multimeter to Diode Mode. Place RED probe on PCB ground (metal shield frame) and probe

      the large coils and capacitors surrounding S555 with the BLACK probe:

      - Main Input Filter Capacitors (VBAT / VDD_MAIN): Normal reading is ~380mV to 500mV (0.000V indicates

        a direct primary short).

      - VDD_INT Buck Coils: Normal reading is ~220mV to 340mV.

      - VDD_MIF Buck Coils: Normal reading is ~180mV to 280mV.

      - VDD_CPU Big / Little Coils: Because of low CPU core internal resistance, normal reading is very low

        (~0.020V to 0.075V), which is normal and NOT a ground short.

      - Peripheral LDO Capacitors (Camera / Display / Touch rails): Normal readings range from ~400mV to 650mV.

   2. Short-Circuit Verification:

      - If any buck coil (other than CPU core) shows 0.000V with continuity beep, disconnect surrounding filter

        capacitors first to confirm whether the short originates inside the S555 chip or downstream in the CPU.

B. Hot Testing (Power Key & Voltage Trigger Test):

   1. Connect board to a DC power supply set to 4.0V (current limited to 2.5A):

      - Check Power Button Line: Must measure ~1.8V to 3.8V pull-up. Pressing the button must drop this line to 0V.

      - Check Buck Outputs during Boot Attempt:

        * VDD_INT coil must rise to ~0.8V DC.

        * VDD_MIF coil must output ~0.85V to 1.0V DC.

        * If input voltage is present but buck coils fail to output any voltage upon pressing power key, S555

          is defective, has cold solder balls, or is held in reset.

4. SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Package Architecture:

  * S555 features a dense 208-ball fine-pitch BGA footprint situated near the Exynos CPU and RAM.

    Strict thermal control is critical to prevent disturbing the underfilled CPU nearby.

- Desoldering & Heat Protection:

  * Apply dual-layer Kapton tape covered with thick aluminum heat reflective tape over the Exynos CPU and UFS

    flash memory to prevent desoldering adjacent chips.

  * Apply a moderate amount of high-grade tacky flux around the S555 perimeter.

  * Hot air rework parameters: Temperature 335°C – 345°C, Airflow 30%–35%.

  * Apply heat uniformly in circular motions for 20–25 seconds. Gently nudge the IC edge; when it floats,

    lift it vertically with precision tweezers.

- Motherboard Pad Cleanup:

  * Apply leaded solder paste (Sn63/Pb37, 183°C) to lower the melting temperature of the remaining factory solder.

  * Wick the pads flat using fine desoldering copper wick and a clean knife soldering tip at 285°C.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA); verify under a microscope that no solder bridge

    exists between the 208 micro-pads.

- Reballing Procedure:

  * Use a dedicated Samsung S8 / S555 BGA stencil (0.12mm thickness).

  * Spread 183°C fine-grain leaded solder paste evenly across all 208 apertures.

  * Reflow with hot air at 280°C and low airflow (15%) until uniform, shiny solder balls are formed.

- Installation & Alignment:

  * Apply a thin, transparent layer of tacky flux onto the motherboard footprint.

  * Align the Pin 1 orientation dot on S555 with the silkscreen corner marker on the PCB.

  * Reflow at 310°C – 320°C with 25%–30% airflow. Observe the IC self-center on its molten solder balls.

  * Allow the PCB to cool down completely to room temperature before applying power to avoid thermal stress.
