SAMSUNG S2MF301A HARDWARE & CHIP-LEVEL REPAIR GUIDE

================================================================================

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 1: FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Architecture: Integrated Sub-PMIC with High-Efficiency Synchronous Buck Charger.

- Voltage & Current Ratings:

  * Input Operating Voltage (VBUS): 4.0V to 11.5V DC (supporting 5V, 9V, and

    variable PPS fast charging up to 25W).

  * System Voltage (VSYS): Dynamically regulated between 3.5V and 4.45V DC.

  * Maximum Charging Current: Up to 3.5A continuous output into single-cell battery.

- Power Path Management (NVDC Architecture):

  * Decouples the main system rail (VSYS) from the battery. System boots instantly

    upon connecting the charger even with an over-discharged or disconnected battery.

  * Supplement Mode: Automatically draws supplementary current from the battery

    during heavy CPU/GPU workload peaks that exceed adapter capabilities.

- USB-OTG Reverse Boost:

  * Integrated synchronous step-up converter supplying steady 5.0V DC @ 1.5A to

    external USB accessories and OTG flash drives.

- Control & Monitoring Interface:

  * High-speed I2C serial communication bus (SDA, SCL, INT_N) linked directly to

    the Exynos Application Processor.

  * Integrated multi-channel ADC monitoring battery voltage, charge current, input

    power, and thermal thermistor status.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 2: BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Completely Dead Phone / DC Power Supply Short-Circuit Alarm:

   - High-side buck switching FET failure inside S2MF301A dead-shorts the primary

     VBUS input or VSYS rail to ground, causing the bench DC power supply or USB

     meter to trip instantly upon connection.

2. Fake Charging / No Current Draw (0.000A to 0.150A):

   - The device displays the charging lightning bolt animation on the screen,

     but current drawn from the wall adapter remains at 0.00A or freezes below

     0.15A without increasing the battery percentage. Usually caused by a broken

     bootstrap capacitor (BTST), an open SW coil, or internal driver failure in S2MF301A.

3. 25W Super Fast Charging Inoperative (Slow 5V Charging Only):

   - S2MF301A fails to negotiate USB-PD PPS data packets, restricting charging

     speed to standard 5V 1.0A or 5V 1.5A.

4. Phone Reboots Continuously on Battery (Works Only When Plugged In):

   - Internal BATFET degradation prevents discharge current from flowing from the

     battery pack to the VSYS rail. The phone restarts in a boot-loop on battery,

     but operates normally once the USB cable is connected.

5. "Charging Paused: Battery Temperature Too Low/High" Pop-up Warning:

   - Damaged internal thermal sensing ADC circuitry in S2MF301A misinterprets

     battery NTC resistance, triggering safety charge cut-off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 3: STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[A] Cold Testing (Diode Mode Readings - Red Probe on GND, Black Probe on Pin):

- VBUS Input Filter Capacitor (adjacent to S2MF301A):

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.480V - 0.620V (480mV - 620mV).

  * If < 0.030V: Direct VBUS short to GND.

- PMID Decoupling Capacitor:

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.450V - 0.580V.

- VSYS Main Output Inductor (Hot Side / System Rail):

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.340V - 0.440V.

- VBAT (Battery Connector positive terminal):

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.380V - 0.480V.

- Bootstrap Node (BTST capacitor terminals):

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.420V - 0.520V.

- I2C Bus Pull-Up Resistors (SDA / SCL lines):

  * Normal Diode Value: 0.450V - 0.550V (both lines must be balanced within ±15mV).

[B] Hot Testing (Live Measurements with 25W USB-PD Charger Connected):

- Probe VBUS: Must measure steady 5.0V - 5.2V DC, rising dynamically to 9.0V DC

  upon 25W PPS handshake.

- Probe PMID: Must equal the input VBUS voltage.

- Probe VSYS Inductor: Must read 3.7V - 4.35V DC; oscilloscope should show clean

  PWM switching waveforms at 1.5 MHz.

- Probe Bootstrap Capacitor: Must measure a steady 4.5V - 5.0V DC differential

  bias across the capacitor during switching.

[C] Rosin Smoke / Thermal Imaging Short Isolation:

- If VBUS or VSYS is shorted to ground, apply rosin smoke across S2MF301A and nearby

  filtering capacitors.

- Inject 3.8V (current limited to 2.0A) onto the shorted line.

- Rapid melting of the rosin directly over the S2MF301A silicon die confirms

  internal junction destruction requiring IC replacement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 4: SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Component Fragility:

  * S2MF301A is an ultra-miniature, fine-pitch BGA component with bare silicon edges.

    It is highly vulnerable to thermal shock, corner fractures, and uneven heating.

- Adjacent IC Protection:

  * S2MF301A is situated close to the main Exynos CPU and UFS flash memory. Cover

    all adjacent sensitive chips with two layers of high-temperature Kapton tape

    and a copper thermal heat shield.

- Desoldering Guidelines:

  * Hot Air Station Temperature: 335°C - 345°C.

  * Airflow Rate: 35% - 40% using a 5mm nozzle.

  * Apply a small amount of premium tacky flux (Amtech NC-559-V2 or Kingbo).

  * Direct hot air in smooth, continuous circular motions around the chip perimeter

    for 15 - 20 seconds. Lift the chip vertically with precision curved tweezers

    the instant all solder balls liquefy. Never apply lateral force to prevent

    ripping motherboard pads.

- PCB Pad Cleanup:

  * Apply Sn63/Pb37 leaded solder with a mini-chisel soldering iron tip (320°C)

    to neutralize lead-free factory solder on the footprint pads.

  * Planarize the footprint using high-density copper desoldering braid until all

    pads are mirror-flat.

  * Clean thoroughly with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and inspect under microscope

    for damaged pads or solder bridging.

- Reballing Specifications:

  * Stencil: Dedicated Samsung S2MF301 / Universal Samsung Sub-PMIC BGA stencil (0.40mm pitch).

  * Solder Paste: Sn63/Pb37 (183°C melting point, Type 4 or Type 5 ultra-fine paste).

  * Squeegee dried solder paste uniformly into stencil apertures.

  * Reflow using hot air gun at 280°C - 290°C with low airflow (20%) to form

    uniform, spherical solder balls.

- Installation:

  * Orient the Pin 1 corner index dot with the white silkscreen triangle on the PCB.

  * Apply a micro-thin layer of tacky flux.

  * Reflow at 335°C - 340°C with 35% airflow.

  * Allow surface tension to pull the chip into exact alignment, then give an

    ultra-gentle micro-touch with tweezers to verify molten ball elasticity.

  * Let the board cool naturally to room temperature before testing charging current.
