SAMSUNG S2DOS07 DISPLAY POWER PMIC HARDWARE & REPAIR GUIDE
================================================================================
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 1: FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE & CIRCUIT ROLE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Architecture: Integrated Dual-Output Switch-Mode AMOLED Bias Power Supply
combining a Synchronous Step-Up (Boost) Converter, an Inverting Buck-Boost Charge
Pump, and multi-channel low-noise LDO regulators.
- Operating Electrical Parameters:
* Input Operating Voltage (VBAT / VDD_SYS): 2.7V to 4.8V DC direct from the
battery power rail.
* Regulated Output Power Rails:
- ELVDD (Positive AMOLED Rail): +4.60V DC nominal (programmable from +4.4V to
+5.0V via I2C).
- ELVSS (Negative AMOLED Rail): -1.40V to -4.40V DC (Inverting output providing
negative bias to OLED cathodes).
- VCI / AVDD (Analog Panel Supply): +3.0V to +3.3V DC.
- VDD / VIO (DDI Logic Rail): +1.80V DC for display driver digital interface.
* Output Current Capability: Up to 600mA - 800mA continuous on ELVDD/ELVSS to
support ultra-bright HDR display modes.
- Display Power Sequencing:
* Enforces precise microsecond turn-on timing: VDD (1.8V) -> VCI (3.0V) ->
ELVDD (+4.6V) -> ELVSS (-4.0V). A breakdown in this timing causes the display
panel to enter hardware shutdown or produce a black screen.
- Control & Telemetry Interface:
* Digital Enable Pins (DISP_EN / AMOLED_EN) driven by the Application Processor
or Display Driver IC.
* High-speed I2C serial control bus for dynamic brightness voltage trimming.
- Hardware Protections:
* True Output Disconnect during shutdown (prevents battery leakage through the
boost inductor), Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), Over-Current Protection (OCP),
and Thermal Shutdown (TSHUT).

SECTION 2: BOARD-LEVEL FAULT SYMPTOMS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Black Screen / No Display (Phone Boots Normally):
- The phone turns on, vibrates, plays notification sounds, receives incoming calls,
and charges properly, but the screen remains completely dark. Occurs when
S2DOS07 fails to output +4.6V ELVDD or -4.0V ELVSS.
2. Direct Short on Main Battery Rail (VBAT / VDD_SYS):
- Connecting the board to a DC power supply trips the bench supply immediately
(draws 2A - 5A at 4.0V). Caused by a punctured internal high-side switching
boost FET inside S2DOS07 shorting VBAT directly to ground.
3. Screen Flashes Briefly Once, Then Goes Black:
- Upon pressing the power key, the Samsung boot logo flashes for a split second
and immediately vanishes into a black screen. Indicates that S2DOS07 initiates
the boost cycle, but triggers hardware shut-off due to a shorted negative
ELVSS filtering capacitor or cracked boost inductor.
4. Display Shuts Down Under High Brightness / White Screen:
- Display operates normally at low brightness, but crashes to black as soon as
the brightness slider is pushed above 80% or a white web page is opened. Caused
by degraded internal boost FETs unable to supply peak current.
5. High Localized Overheating Near the Display FPC Connector:
- S2DOS07 becomes scalding hot during screen-on time, rapidly draining the
battery and causing display discoloration or green flickering lines.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 3: STEP-BY-STEP MULTIMETER TESTING & DIAGNOSTICS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[A] Cold Testing (Diode Mode Readings - Red Probe on GND, Black Probe on Pin):
- VBAT Input Decoupling Capacitor:
* Normal Diode Value: 0.350V - 0.450V (350mV - 450mV).
* If < 0.030V: Direct VBAT short to ground.
- ELVDD Positive Rail Output Capacitor (+4.6V line):
* Normal Diode Value: 0.450V - 0.580V.
* If 0.000V: Shorted ELVDD line; inspect output capacitor or display FPC.
- ELVSS Negative Rail Output Capacitor (-4.0V line):
* Normal Diode Value: 0.500V - 0.650V (Red probe on GND, Black probe on rail).
* If 0.000V: Shorted negative rail; common cause of black screen on Samsung OLEDs.
- VCI (+3.0V) & VDD (+1.8V) LDO Output Capacitors:
* Normal Diode Value: 0.420V - 0.550V.
- Boost Switching Inductor (LX node):
* Normal Diode Value: 0.350V - 0.450V on both inductor pads. Inspect inductor
under microscope for micro-cracks in the ferrite core.
[B] Hot Testing (Live Voltage Checks with Motherboard Powered On & Screen Connected):
- Power on the phone and probe test points on the display connector / near S2DOS07:
* Probe ELVDD: Must read steady +4.60V DC.
* Probe ELVSS: Must read steady negative voltage (-1.4V to -4.0V DC).
* Probe VCI: Must read +3.0V DC.
* Probe VDD: Must read +1.8V DC.
- If input VBAT (4.0V) and enable signal (DISP_EN = 1.8V) are present, but ELVDD
or ELVSS measures 0V, S2DOS07 is defective or has failed solder balls.
[C] Rosin Smoke / Thermal Camera Short Localization:
- If VBAT or ELVDD is dead-shorted, coat S2DOS07, the boost coil, and peripheral
0201/0402 ceramic capacitors with rosin smoke.
- Inject 3.8V DC (current limit set to 1.5A) onto the shorted line.
- Immediate melting of rosin over the bare silicon die of S2DOS07 confirms internal
gate breakdown requiring chip replacement.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SECTION 4: SOLDERING, REBALLING & REWORK SPECIFICATIONS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Component Sensitivity & Fragility:
* S2DOS07 is an ultra-compact bare-die WLCSP chip (~16-20 balls, 0.40mm pitch).
The glass silicon die is extremely fragile. Never apply uneven mechanical
prying pressure while cold to prevent chipping corners.
- Plastic FPC Connector Protection:
* S2DOS07 is placed directly adjacent to the main display FPC connector on the
motherboard. Plastic connectors warp and melt at 230°C. Mask the FPC connector
and surrounding passives with two layers of high-temperature Kapton tape
and an aluminum / copper heat shield plate.
- Desoldering Guidelines:
* Hot Air Station Temperature: 335°C - 345°C.
* Airflow Rate: 30% - 35% using a 4mm - 5mm circular nozzle.
* Apply a small drop of premium low-residue tacky flux (Amtech NC-559-V2).
* Circle the heat evenly around the chip edges for 12 - 15 seconds.
* As soon as all solder balls liquefy, lift vertically using fine curved tweezers.
Never pull horizontally to prevent tearing microscopic copper pads.
- PCB Pad Cleanup & Planarization:
* Apply a small bead of leaded Sn63/Pb37 solder wire with a fine micro-soldering
iron tip (320°C) to blend with high-temp lead-free factory solder.
* Clean and level the PCB pads using high-density copper desoldering wick until
all pads are completely flat and mirror-smooth.
* Clean thoroughly with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and inspect under microscope.
- Reballing Procedure:
* Stencil: Dedicated S2DOS07 / Universal WLCSP 0.40mm pitch BGA stencil.
* Solder Paste: Sn63/Pb37 (183°C melting point, Type 4 or Type 5 ultra-fine).
* Squeegee dried solder paste uniformly into the stencil apertures.
* Reflow using hot air at 280°C with low airflow (20%) to form perfectly identical,
bright spherical solder balls.
- Installation:
* Apply a microscopic film of tacky flux over the PCB pads.
* Align the Pin 1 corner index dot with the white silkscreen alignment mark on
the board.
* Reflow with hot air at 335°C - 340°C, 30% airflow.
* Watch for surface tension to pull the chip into exact alignment. Give an
ultra-gentle micro-touch with tweezers to verify molten ball elasticity.
* Allow the motherboard to cool down naturally to room temperature before testing.
